Claire’s jewellery collections have emerged from significant time spent in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. Her narrative is uniquely rooted in return trips to indigenous artistic communities in that region.
Claire has lived in Kunming, capital city of Yunnan - which literally translated means ‘Cloud South’. Kunming is known in China as ‘City of Eternal Spring’ and is becoming famous for growing and supplying flowers to much of East Asia. The beautiful old city of Dali which Claire also visits is famous for its highly skilled silversmiths and for its Butterfly Spring which attracts thousands of butterflies each year. The classic themes of roses and butterflies recur throughout her collections, a synthesis of eastern and western inspiration.
Claire is intrigued by features ranging from breath-taking landscapes, unusual details in architecture, through to the tiniest fragments of crafted objects she finds in Yunnan markets; she records them in detailed drawings and photography. Claire’s body of work from China, which continues to grow in London, is a unique source of inspiration to bring back to her Camberwell studio where she forges and sculpts her ideas in silver.
