After writing a series of children’s books and travelling with her family, Althea Braithwaite turned to the art of glassware and within a short time developed great skill in crafting stunning pieces. She has displayed her work throughout the UK in locations such as The Stained Glass Museum in Ely Cathedral, Cambs, the Alex Miles Gallery in London and The Old Fire Engine House Gallery in Cambs to name but a few. Fusing carefully chosen pieces of glass with the aid of a kiln, Althea has spent her career creating breathtaking amalgamated glass windows in various hues as well as a beautiful collection of dishes, plates and pictures.
Althea’s style is eclectic and vibrant – dashes of vivid reds and electric blues in her wall paintings and dishes. Some of her dishes are uniform and structured whereas others release her intense and exciting nature, intricate patterns and beguiling form; truly Althea’s glasswares are extraordinarily unique in their thrilling designs and structure. Since starting her work with glass in 2003, Althea’s pieces have gone from strength to strength and she is always keen to hear new ideas and is open to commissions where available.
"For the last few years I've immersed myself in the joy, delight and creative potential of the wonderful medium of glass. I use fusing techniques to manipulate shadows and reflections and to exploit the amazing palette of colours that glass offers. I'm always experimenting with new ideas and I love commissions, they stretch my skills and imagination. I have been commissioned to make windows, internal and external door panels, wall lights and tiles for bathrooms and kitchens." - Althea Braithwaite
