Virginia has always loved dogs, ever since growing up along side 'Tolly', a gorgeous Labrador cross Irish Setter. Her Family had him when she was two years old , and she was eighteen when he died, to Virginia he seemed more like a brother than a dog. Virginia sees a lot of Tolly in the dogs that she makes, along with her Mothers Labrador cross Springer Spaniel, Polly; she's big pawed, big eared, very springy, and ever so slightly neurotic. The perfect artists muse.
Her dogs start their lives as hollow extruded tubes which are then cut and formed. The first stage is making the body, to do this Virginia packs her basic shape with newspaper and leaves it until leather hard. She then starts to construct the rest of the dog, bracing its limbs with props and clay until they are dry enough to support themselves. Where the clay is joined, she leaves a torn or cut edge to shows that she is using clay and how it has been put together. The spotty and patchy dogs Virginia produces are the result of masking certain areas where she doesn't want the smoke to reach.
