Caroline Riley trained and subsequently worked in Textile Design-but has always found time to do her own drawing and painting. Since leaving London and moving back to her roots in North Yorkshire she has devoted more time to her painting until it has become her main source of income.
Her studio is a converted tractor-shed on the North York Moors where she is surrounded by dramatic moorland, full of sheep and highland cattle, and not far from the north east coast.
She is inspired by these local surroundings but also travels north to Scotland and Northumberland in search of fresh subject matter. Although Caroline always travels with sketch books to hand she often uses her photography as reference material-mostly because the highly detailed nature of her work makes the drawing process very slow.
