Deborah Sandersley is a mixed media artist who uses photography and glass to create a highly individual and recognisable style of work. She spent over ten years working as a freelance photographer for clients such as Time Out, The Big Issue and Decca Records before studying Glass and Fine Art at the Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design. Her varied and unique compositions are inspired by her will to look at the past and present and explore the way in which time can transform our experiences and memories. Her most recent bodies of work set out to reveal classic or archival imagery within a contemporary, almost urban context. By re-representing the past in this way she is allowing for it to be rediscovered, to be seen by a new generation in a resplendent and relatable way. In this sense Deborah’s work is very much a celebration of what she considers to be timeless and inspired imagery left behind by those who lived through now forgotten times. Also featuring heavily throughout her work are the perpetually changing streets of East London. A place where she continues to live and work and somewhere that most certainly inspires her gritty, audacious style.
Through using glass Deborah is able to layer the images she creates, turning what were once two-dimensional photographs into unquestionably bold three-dimensional works of art. Exploiting the reflective and transparent properties of glass is a vital part of her work; doing so is what creates the unquestionably real impressions of depth, movement and energy in her work, but most importantly it allows a sense of narrative to be developed within the imagination of the viewer. The images she makes are screen printed and fired onto the glass before being etched and often hand painted.
"Lighting, whether artificial or natural, is integral in creating a somewhat fantastical representation of what is otherwise an ordinary scene" - Deborah Sandersley
