This unique piece, made for ‘The Celebration of Craftsmanship & Design Exhibition’ (2013) is crafted from a combination of natural ash and ‘Thermo-ash’; the latter being ash that is kiln-dried until it reaches a pleasing dark toffee colour. A process which also aids in accentuating the finer details of the woods grain.
An intriguing design this free-standing cabinet balances, to all appearances, on only the two outside front feet …
With height-adjustable shelves, two within the central section and one in each of the outside compartments, this cabinet offers plenty of versatile storage space. Tim designed this cabinet in contemplation of the many small, quirky and irreplaceable businesses with their backs to the wall at a time when so many customers are looking at short-term savings rather than quality and longevity in their purchases.
He wanted to design a piece of practical furniture which would convey a sense of stepping forward with hope and determination, in defiance of the spectre of ‘retail sameness’, a movement threatening to destroy not only the individuality of his native city of Hereford, but countless other British cities too.
