Inspired by the architecture and rich history of Havana, Cuba This dining room storage cabinet was designed as a response to the contradiction between traditional colonial buildings and the Soviet inspired modernist blocks seen throughout the city (see also the companion piece Havana Libre cocktail cabinet).
The design of the cabinet was taken from the ‘Planitario’ building in Plaza Vieja, one of the central squares of the City. Now restored to all its colonial glory with columns, arches, and blue painted doors, it sits in the beautiful calm square, once used as a two storey car park during the Soviet years.
The cabinet itself is raised on a solid maple wood stand, meaning the user doesn't have to bend down awkwardly to retrieve items; and two of the storage sections are illuminated with LED lighting which turns on when the doors are opened.
To the left, behind the double doors, is an open storage area with two adjustable glass shelves, and on the right, behind the third door, is a column of three drawers ideal for keeping things such as cutlery and linen; there is also a smaller storage area left above the drawers, complete with a single glass shelf. The doors (undoubtedly the most dominant feature of this piece) are made from solid blue stained figured maple and grey stained koto.
