This piece of cast glass sculpture is displayed in an antique glass dome with a wooden base from Belgium. This is a 100% unique sculpture that forms part of a series. The landscape is cast from miniature romanesco cabbages, in a process similar to bronze casting. The house is highly polished glass that fits perfectly onto the romanesco. It also acts like a prism and casts beautiful shadows at certain times of the day.
Mould making is an important part of the process. often Effie will use natural things like broccoli. She creates a very fine eggshell mould around the object and repeats this three times. It is then fired in the kiln so that the vegetable matter turns to ash. The moulds are then set up with a tiny terracotta plant pot placed above them so that she can reservoir cast each piece in order to capture all the detail. The mould is then broken apart to reveal the glass, making each piece individual and unique.
