This intriguing piece of cast glass sculpture is displayed in an antique glass dome with a wooden base from Belgium. This is a 100% unique piece of sculpture, and forms part of the 'Undercover' series. In a process similar to bronze casting, the landscape is cast from miniature Romanesco broccoli, whilst the house is made with highly polished glass and acts like a prism which casts beautiful shadows throughout day.
Mould making is an important part of Effie's construction process, often using natural things like broccoli to attain a particular shape. She creates a very fine eggshell mould around the object, repeating this up to three times. This mould is then fired in the kiln, turning any vegetable matter turns to ash. The moulds are then set up with a tiny terracotta plant pot placed above them so that she can reservoir cast each piece in order to capture all the detail.
Effie will use clay or hand cut layers of thin wax to make the original forms, like the house for example.
The final process is polishing which requires four stages, from rough grit to a felt wheel with cerium applied.
