Hilary Cartmel was born in 1958 and grew up in Devon.She moved to Nottingham in 1980 to study for a degree in Fine Art at Trent Polytechnic. Now living in north Nottinghamshire on the South Yorkshire border where she creates a widely appreciated range of metal sculptures from her studio.
Hilary has worked to commission for public sites in both rural and urban environments, alongside producing work for exhibition and sale. Her work has featured in solo and group exhibitions all around the country, in places such as the Tate Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Doncaster Museum,and Nottingham Castle Museum. Her commissioned work can be seen from London to Exeter, and as far north as Edinburgh.
She works in a number of materials and metals: stainless steel or mild steel, with cast metals bronze, brass, aluminium, cast glass, glass mosaic, and found objects. All works are robustly made and designed to be low maintenance, making them especially suitable for display in the outdoor environments. Alongside her large-scale public artwork Hilary also creates drawings, prints and smaller sculptural pieces.
Hilary is on the Crafts Council selected register of Makers, additionally working as a promoter for Nottinghamshire’s Rural Touring Theatre and Music network.
