This painting comes from Rowena's 'Power Stations' series. Having visited Sizewell Beach and experienced the looming presence of the power station there, witnessing the local residents relaxing on the sand in the shadow of the mammoth edifice rearing up behind them, Rowena was moved to make a painting of the scene.
Rowena's fascination with power stations can be traced back to her interest in the notion of the 'sublime'. The 'sublime' is a concept that interprets terror, drama and intense personal emotions, and then applies them in an aesthetic form to explain the human condition. Rowena wants her paintings of power stations to highlight some of the dangers of contemporary life; drawing our attention to the contrast between their status as a provider and potential source of catastrophe.
