In 1990 Deborah Esses began experimenting with collage and it wasn't long until her work won a whole host of awards in national competitions. From the very beginning she was attracted to the idea of depicting the emotional aspects of each of her subjects, more concerned with revealing their psychological state than reproducing or imitating their image in a purely realistic sense.
Her work may sometimes include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of coloured or handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects.
