From a varied, limited edition of 20 prints on 250gms Arches Blanc paper.
An original print is a work of art which is usually produced in multiples. Unlike an original drawing or painting, the image is not drawn directly onto the paper, but is instead made using an indirect transfer process with somethings like a sheet of lino, perspex, glass or metal. Ian's etchings are often made using a metal plate, usually copper or steel, which is first covered in a waxy, acid-resistant ground. Once applied, the desired image is then etched onto the surface of the plate by scraping through the ground with an etching needle, exposing the metal beneath. To finish the etched plate is then put into a bath of acid which eats or ‘bites’ into the lines of the image, and if desired, a tone can be created using aquatint. Ian's etchings use two steel plates in combination with the 'la poupee' inking technique - in which more than one colour is applied and blended by hand for each individual print. This results in subtle variations across each edition, making every print different from the last and truly unique.
In the case of limited edition prints an artist is bound by law not to exceed, extend or re-edition an image, and, once the edition limit has has been reached, the print panel is normally destroyed or defaced so that no more prints can be made.
