'With a respectful irreverence for tradition, award winning designer John Jacques creates original, bold and beautiful furniture from his studio/workshop in Wiltshire. He established Radiance Furniture Design in early 2012 after spending many years learning and honing his skills and chisels in Britain and abroad.
Recently chosen by The Craft Council to participate in their prestigious Hothouse development programme for emerging makers who show high levels of originality and skill, John’s passion is fed by the process of revealing, enhancing and preserving the inherent natural beauty of the mainly native timber he carefully selects. After the process of conception and development of a design, he enjoys the day-to-day processes of selecting, planing, more selecting and planing, cutting, shaping, gluing, sanding and finally – to protect and make the piece sing – applying the finish. Whether this is oil, wax or a more durable lacquer, it’s always a pleasurable moment, because the colours deepen and the natural figuring is augmented and amplified.
John balances the creativity of inspiration with the problem solving of the design process to create bold, sculptural forms that are beautiful, tactile and innovative. Every piece he makes is a labour of love, not to be rushed – it takes him several weeks to complete each item of furniture. The rewards for John come not just from the process of designing and making but from the finished result, and the pleasure it gives to the new owners.'

'We have been living with our stack for 3 weeks and it still makes me smile every time I see it. It is almost impossible not to run your hand over it as you open or close the drawers with the beautiful accompanying smell of cedar. There have been many admiring comments from our friends and families as we have proudly shown it off. (including a couple of appreciating comments on the handles!) I think I have rearranged it once a week so far. Each configuration gives it a slightly different feel and seems to expose more of the different colours and grains of the woods. The Heeley Stack is a wonderful piece of furniture. What makes it even more special to us is that we were able to share in its creation with you. The visits to your workshop, to decide on the different woods and drawer sizes and to see it in production, were really enjoyable and helped to give us an insight of your passion, design vision and superb craftsmanship. Thanks again for our very beautiful Stack and for making the whole experience of its design, production and delivery so special. We look forward to meeting you again.
