Karl is an artist living and working in Hereford. An engineer since 1981, he became a full-time artist in early 2013 after many years of developing his practice and techniques. Looking thorough his portfolio shows his approach to realism in art, a style he uses to cover a wide range of subject matter. He is currently known as 'the leather artist' because of his unique approach which involves using various kinds of leather to paint on as oppose to a more traditional canvas surface. The challenge in creating leather artwork is matching the composition with hides that each have different textures and colours. The various qualities of different leathers add to the art in varying ways, fine kid leather, for example, is ideal for highly detailed portraiture and still life, whilst textured hide is perfect for rough, wrinkled-skin wildlife, such as that of an elephant or rhino.
All of Karl's work comes in a modest frame ready to hang, but is not mounted behind glass; this allows the leather to be fully appreciated for its aroma and texture. The leather requires no special treatment, and should be handled and displayed just as you would a traditional oil painting.
