Despite having no formal training artist Kate Stewart is still able to produce an alluring medley of magnificent textiles art. Over the years she has looked to develop and improve her creative skills by taking numerous short courses in drawing, watercolour, woodwork and embroidery, all of which are made use of in her work. Predominately working in textiles and watercolour much of Kate’s work is inspired by the natural world, landscapes and plants are often the central focus of her delicate and lustrous style. Using overlaid transparent fabrics alongside watercolour washes Kate’s work intentionally sets out to exploit the transformative properties of light. A technique particularly prevalent in the making of her screens where the shadow of the back image shines through and can be seen from the other side. The stitching, whether done by hand or machine, adds the line detail and shading to her work.
Over the years Kate’s work has been displayed in a number of solo and group exhibitions in various locations across the UK. Including South Square gallery in Bradford and Manning Mills Community Association. She is very open to working on commissions and is always eager to hear and discuss new ideas brought to her by potential clients.
