Malcolm’s paintings are inspired by a love of the form and structure of aquatic life and maritime subjects. Themes he focuses on in his recent works include reflected light, moving water, and capturing the social history of fishing and coastal communities.
His work has been described as documentary, capturing the quintessence of the subjects in which they are, or were, historically encountered. The historical and social context of the subjects is enhanced using a blend of engineering drawings, financial records, poetry, maritime charts and mythological iconography. The combined effect of acrylic and ink layered with this collage produces paintings that are realistic and dramatic.
He has been a full time artist since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone in 1986, and his work can be found in many public and private collections in both the UK and abroad.
