Martin has been creating wooden sculptures for over 12 years. During this time he has developed an understanding and respect for wood with a unique perspective of its diverse growth patterns, observing how wood can be shaped by the elements. This knowledge has led Martin to follow these environmental forms in his carvings, working natural moulding of shape and texture to create pieces of great beauty and strength reflecting the natural world.
Art has always been a constant in Martins life. Originally trained in Arboriculture (the study of trees) and graduating with Merit from the highly respected Merrist Wood College, Surrey in 2002.
Martin's experience as a Tree Surgeon, climbing the giant natural sculptures of trees in the UK and New Zealand also gave him the opportunity to watch and learn at close hand, the movement, organic beauty and grain to which he feels so strongly connected. Martin has expressed that this was an intense and important period in his development as an artist. It gave him the opportunity to completely get to know and understand his subject.
Recently Martin introduced the the addition of wrought iron, which both contrasts and complements his work. Enjoying the disciplines of both carving and smithing to develop new ideas; giving greater freedom, and breaking the boundaries of working solely with wood.
