Michael Atkin is an artist and printmaker who creates lovingly made limited edition etchings, lino prints and fine art books. His imagery is often figurative or narrative in nature, frequently set in the inspiring landscape of the Yorkshire countryside near his home.
His images begin life as brief outline drawings made into a sketchbook before the desired composition is either etched onto copper with nitric acid or cut into lino. From here Michael’s work is manually printed onto high quality handmade paper with the use of antique printing presses dating from as far back as the 19th century. These antique presses form the staple of Michael’s creative process, an Albion Press, made in Leeds, an Etching Press & Arab Press) are used daily.
Every year Michael opens his workshop to visitors, allowing them to see just how he creates his magnificent prints. Through traditional methods dating from the 15th century, using mordents and gouges, copper and zinc plate, guests are offered a glimpse into the wonderful history of print making. A traditionalist at heart Michael’s printing methods offer an insightful window into the beginnings of modern art and design, preserving skills and techniques which would have otherwise almost certainly been forgotten in an ever digitising world.
