Trevor Craggs is both a painter and a sculptor who after a 20 year career working as a graphic designer and illustrator returned to university gaining a BA hons in Fine Art. It was during this phase of study that Trevor’s interest in semi abstract painting and sculpture truly began to blossom. A world of new possibilities was being opened up as the restrictions of his previous work lost prevalence. Trevor had found a new driving force in this tactile and expressive environment.
Trevor’s sculptural work is heavily focused on the human form, an aspect of his work which can be traced back to his many years of experience with life drawing. Here significance seems to be placed on gesture and body language, as well as presenting the viewer with a unique or unexpected perspective with regards to how they not only look at but appreciate the human form. Making these figures as commanding as they are beautiful. Results which are achieved by delicately firing clay into ceramic using ancient Japanese Raku, Smoke, or the elusive Crystalline glaze process.
Trevor’s deeply atmospheric landscape paintings are his attempt to convey the essence of being in nature and the emotions such an encounter can stir within us. Seeking to recall the intrinsic sense of drama that ever changing environments carry with them. And like nature itself Trevor’s landscapes seem to offer us everything from the placid to the chaotic, the inspiring to the subtle, a true testament to natural forces.
